Artist Highlight: Luke Mitchell of The High Divers
Our artist feature this Wednesday is an incredible singer, guitarist and songwriter, Luke Mitchell. Luke is the frontman of the rock/soul group, The High Divers, who just followed up their debut album, Riverlust, with the hard-hitting sophomore release of Chicora. The High Divers are currently on tour through the southwest and are making their way through Tempe this Thursday, April 5th at Shady Park.
I've personally been a fan of The High Divers for a long while now. Their music gives off that feel-good, classic vibe of 70's rock & roll, but with a modern production and songwriting style that, for me, puts them up with bands like The Revivalists, Alabama Shakes and Kings Of Leon. I got ahold of Luke as they make their way towards the valley to ask him a little about the band and a big obstacle they encountered last summer.
So the band suffered a major life-threatening car crash back in June of last year when a semi truck hit and flipped your tour van. Did this moment alter your perspective on where you were heading with the band, not only in terms of the music, but also with the direction of your career?
"A lot of things have for us after that experience. We don’t just play random shows anymore, and we won’t just play any gig anywhere, anytime. Being in that accident was a bit of a gift to all of us, and maybe by extension, to a lot of people that know us. We take traveling very serious now, and we are hyper-aware of our driving, but mostly other drivers.
It’s important for a young band to play as many gigs as possible, and to spread their reach as wide as they can in a short time, but for us, we aren’t going to travel places just for kicks anymore. We know how dangerous it is out on the road, and we are getting to know our worth, which is another important stage for a band.
Shows mean a lot more to us now, too. It’s painful for all of us getting over these injuries, but as soon as we hit the stage, those physical aches and worries melt away, and we are completely in the music with everyone that paid money to share an experience with us. It’s a sacred thing, and that’s where we’re happiest."
