Artist Highlight: Benji of Good Rust

Our artist feature this week is the frontman and song writer of the Tempe-based band, Good Rust. The band has been around for 8 years since its inception, swapping out different members, but always with the same vision. They've had the pleasure of sharing the stage with artists such as Matisyahu, The Expendables and Reel Big Fish, and released their debut EP this past November at Last Exit Live, which has gathered formidable acclaim in the local reggae scene.

With Good Rust headlining artist for RIVIR's upcoming April 20th show at Yucca Taproom, we caught Benji outside Yucca this past weekend during the Unity Through Community Spring Fest to ask him some questions about the band.

Good Rust has seen a lot of different members over its 8 year span - in fact, none of the current members were in the original lineup. With all this history that began before you all joined, does it ever feel like you guys are a part of something greater than yourselves?

"Just like every band, Good Rust has definitely evolved over the years. It's really cool to look back and see the changes and additions that have helped shape our sound and style. Everyone that has been in Good Rust has left an important skid mark on the band's underpants, and I don't think any of us in the band would have imagined the opportunities and friendships we've made, so it does feel like we're a part of something bigger. Everyone that comes out to the shows are apart of that feeling too, and as long as the fans stay moist, the rust will stay good."

Are there any moments that you've shared with the band that felt particularly special?

"I think the most memorable show was our EP release in November at Last Exit Live. That felt like a turning point for us, because up to that point we had no recordings of our work, it was a huge payoff for years of work. There was such a great line up with Mind Upside releasing their EP the same night, our brothers Clint Stevens, Why Worry, and Howard Til Midnight threw down great sets, and everyone who came out that night brought so much energy. We ended up giving away over 200 copies of our EP that night, so hopefully those CDs are getting passed around and put to use."

Check out Good Rust on Facebook and Instagram for updates on shows and new music. We've posted their new EP on Spotify below as well.

For our readers in Arizona, check out Good Rust at Yucca Taproom next Friday, April 20th. They will be joined by Pride Through Strife and Surf AVE. You can get tickets HERE.
